Two neighbors were very competitive and jealous about each other. They were not content about what they had, thinking, must be others are having better than them. The story portrays the moral, how the jealousy takes away all the peace of mind and destroys the contentment and happiness of mind in general.

दो भाईयों की ऐसी कहानी जो अपनी पत्नियों के रोज़ रोज़ के झगड़े से आहत हैं। एक दिन खाना मांगने पर न मिलने से क्रुद्ध हो एक भाई अपनी पत्नी के सर पर प्रहार करता है जिससे कि उसकी मृत्यु हो जाती है लेकिन दूसरा भाई सबके सामने बताता है कि खून भाई ने नहीं बल्कि उसकी पत्नी ने किया है क्योंकि उसका मानना है कि पत्नी तो उसे और मिल जाएगी लेकिन भाई तो दूसरा नहीं मिल सकता।

हरसुंदरी ने मां न बन पाने के कारण अपने पति निवारण का विवाह शेलबाला नाम की किशोरी से तो कर दिया पर उसे क्या पता था कि इसके बाद उसका जीवन इतनी मुश्किलों से भर जाएगा।

यह कहानी जगन्नाथ नाम के एक बेहद कंजूस बूढ़े व्यक्ति की है जिसने थोड़ा सा धन बचाने के लिए अपनी बीवी और बहु का उचित इलाज नहीं करवाया, परिणाम स्वरूप उनकी मृत्यु के बाद उसका बेटा भी उसके पोते गोकुल को लेकर घर से पलायन कर जाता है। अपने कंजूस स्वभाव से ग्रस्त जगन्नाथ अपने पोते गोकुल की मृत्यु का कारण बनता है तथा पागल हो स्वयं भी प्राण त्याग देता है।

Khata” is a story of a girl who in those days got the opportunity of schooling while women’s education was not that very common. It was a path-breaking short story in form of a letter (the letter itself constitutes the whole story) which a typical Bengali upper middle-class wife “Mrinal” writes to her husband. She’s a poet, a thinker and over all a woman who dared to question, expressing bold and fervent statements with realizations coming from within the course of 15 years of her married life through letter to her husband.
