यह कहानी एक ऐसे व्यक्ति की है जो अपनी महत्वकांक्षाओ के चलते अपने बचपन की सहचरी सुरबाला से विवाह के लिए इंकार कर देता है और जब जीवन के यथार्थ पर उतरकर देखता है तो उसे एहसास होता है कि उसने सिर्फ सुरबाला ही नहीं बल्कि सब कुछ खो दिया।

बनवारी जो पत्नी से बेहद प्रेम करता है, अपने हालदार परिवार के के बड़े बेटे होने का फर्ज न निभाते हुए केवल उसकी खुशी के लिए ही सब करता है लेकिन परिस्थिति तब बदल जाती है जब उसे पता चलता है कि उसकी पत्नी किरण की नज़र में उसका कोइ मोल नहीं और वह जी जान से अपने देवर के पुत्र हरिदास की देखभाल करते हुए कब उसकी पत्नी से ज्यादा हालदार परिवार की बड़ी बहू बन गई बनवारी को पता ही नहीं चला।

यह कहानी एक बेहद शरारती लकड़े पाठक की है| जिसकी शरारतों से तंग हो,उसकी मां उसे मामा के संग भेज देती हैं। शुरुआत में तो पाठक नई जगह जाने के उत्साह में राज़ी हो जाता है लेकिन वहां घर और अपने लोगों से दूरी पाठक के लिए असहनीय हो जाती है और वह घर वापसी के उपाय करता है।
