Punishment” is an incisive morality tale about the way that a lie can quickly develop a life of its own. Tagore ingeniously crafts a story that at first seems like it’s going to focus on one version of violence, but instead is enveloped by another.

The story shows how the groom side of the family used to take upperhand in every area during a marriage settlement and the social custom like dowry issue sometimes goes to such extent that leads to death, exploitation and mental torture. In this occasion the bride ultimately died as a result of this social customary evil. 

विवाह एक ऐसा बंधन है जिसमें बंधकर हर लड़की को अपने प्रियजनों से विदा लेनी पड़ती है। हेम भी इसी बंधन में बंध कर अपने पिता से दूर अपने ससुराल चली आई थी किंतु तब ये किसने जाना था कि यह विदा एक दिन अनंत कालीन विदा बन जाएगी।

यह कहानी जगन्नाथ नाम के एक बेहद कंजूस बूढ़े व्यक्ति की है जिसने थोड़ा सा धन बचाने के लिए अपनी बीवी और बहु का उचित इलाज नहीं करवाया, परिणाम स्वरूप उनकी मृत्यु के बाद उसका बेटा भी उसके पोते गोकुल को लेकर घर से पलायन कर जाता है। अपने कंजूस स्वभाव से ग्रस्त जगन्नाथ अपने पोते गोकुल की मृत्यु का कारण बनता है तथा पागल हो स्वयं भी प्राण त्याग देता है।

Khata” is a story of a girl who in those days got the opportunity of schooling while women’s education was not that very common. The little girl was enthusiastically writing everywhere that was not very much appreciated by his brother as she was messing up his writing notebook. Once she got married she was taunted and prevented from writing by her sister-in-law and her husband who had himself a strong passion for writing. At the end she was forced to stop writing. Her fate was bound to surrender herself to the hostile situation. 

The story shows how after giving a shelter to a distressed lady a distinguished man in that village was cornered and became the victim of politics which bound him to lose the legal case which led him to lose his property. 

Awoman with great look, good taste was still not getting the attention from her husband. Each day the distance was impacting huge among their relationship that prompted the lady to  leave her house.

The story depicts The story shows how a happy life can topple down with a single incident and nothing is in our control and nothing to be taken for granted. It’s a story about life’s twist and turn and survival.
